Brexit.  Remember that? Of course it has already happened so what’s on the horizon now are the real life implications.

The Right Honourable Greg Hands MP, Minister of State for Trade Policy in the Department for International Trade (DIT) will join us to discuss the programme of Free Trade Agreements that the government intends to negotiate with other trading partners as an independent trading nation. This includes the US, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and accession to CPTPP and the potential trade benefits that these trade deals could bring to businesses trading internationally in North-east Scotland. The Minister will cover specific sectors including food & drink, tech, financial services, etc.

Even when deals are done, this only avoids tariffs on goods entering and leaving the country. It does not mean that we are in a customs union with the EU and from January 1, an additional 250,000,000 documents every year will be required to enable imports and exports to clear UK ports.

The biggest shake up to customs controls and procedures in decades, if you import or export goods to Europe - no matter the outcome of trade negotiations - this is a time of change for your business.

Also speaking at the breakfast is Liam Smyth, director of trade facilitation at British Chambers of Commerce, who will provide suggestions on practical steps businesses can take now and the support available to them.

The risk of ignoring this will be consignments rotting in warehouses and empty shelves in our shops. This is something the Chamber can help with, so get in touch at chambercustoms@agcc.co.uk.
