First Mover Advantage

As my continued prominence atop the Aten leaderboard indicates, there is a significant competitive edge to be gained through what's known as the "first mover advantage".

A colleague and I were discussing this today in relation to media. During our time working in marketing in London, every brand wanted to be the "first" to do something. A new channel? Get me on it first. A new interactive advertising format? I need to be first there.

The reason is simple: if you are there first and it takes off, you win. This is generally true, including out with the confines of media and marketing.

However in Aberdeen, I fear this edge has been lost. In an economy dominated by the most risk-averse industry known, where unless there are 15 examples of repeatable, guaranteed success, I ain't buying it - small companies are hard-pressed to stand out and differentiate themselves.

But that doesn't have to be the case...

What business have you seen and admire, who are bold?

What are you doing in your business to position yourself first?

  • Not only do we have a risk averse industry on our doorstep but there are still those who take the attitude that they need to go outside Aberdeen - central belt or London to get the best. The jewels in our own crown are sometimes overlooked.
    • Yes I agree Helen
  • Great point Adam, as I have felt this many times and its sent me on a personal attack of my own ability, time and time again. Don't knock me I might be a performance and confidence coach but I'm human first.
One thing I am getting right it seems is my radio show on SHMU fm... it is really helping me learn a new skill, meet many business owners in the NE and at the same time I get to give back to SHMU who are such a lovely organisation with a great set of volunteers. PLUS Im really enjoying the challenge.

Flux stand out for me as a brand with a great personality.
