No point in crying over it....

We did this to be friendlier to the planet and to buy local, but I've also always had a kind of retro satisfaction since we switched to glass bottles being delivered once again. Righ up until this morning! What didn't crack at the top, fell out at the bottom. I'm well aware it would have frozen solid in any container, but if you're in a similar position, have you found a workaround, short of going back to the supermarket and buying milk there?!

  • No solutions for you unfortunately. We went back to getting milk in bottles delivered a few years ago. I think our door must be slightly sheltered as we've not had any issues so far.

    Maybe a fleece lined box?

    • Hi Jeanette, I remember when I was a paper boy - (it was so long ago it was probably more like papyrus) - the lengths people would go to in order to keep newspapers dry and clean when they didn't necessarily have a letterbox on their main front door. Some people had lockboxes, others had specially built wooden boxes in their hallway. One guy had taken a plastic pipe, cut it to length and capped it, so it was just right to place a rolled up newspaper in, where it would remain bone dry from the elements. You're right, I'll have to be more inventive! Fleece lined, you say....

  • Such a shame! Our milkman recorded temp of -20c on his late night round earlier this week - what a hero!

    • Ours too! How he managed to travel in that weather I don't know. Oddly, when the snow is THAT heavy, he'd have as much luck in that old electrically-operated float, skimming over the top! Glass bottles, electric vehicles - our milkies were miles ahead of the world environmentally!

  • Oh no! Haha. Do the milkmen drop off at the same time each time they come? You'll have to run out quicker to take them in!

    • Hi Jessie - yeah, he does, and according to our Ring Doorbell, that's around 1.30am! Unfortunately, the only time I've run at that time of day was for 'Last Orders', (he says, romantically misty-eyed at pre-Covid memories)!

      • Oh wow... didn't realise they ever came that early (late??!)

Have to think of a new plan. Haha

  • Retro is always good! And I've got a solution - wait until the temperature comes up a bit and all will be fine!

    • Andrew, I wish that were true, but unfortunately the drinks which had burst out the top, cracked the bottle that end, and of the remainder, the bottom of the bottle fell out!
