Research....is it a female or male thing?

Hi as you might know Im bring the topic of Imposter Syndrome to a Lunch and Learn on Friday this week.

I'm looking for some feedback, if you could give me your thoughts...

1. Have you experienced Imposter Syndrome?

2. Is this something you think is more relevate to female or male dynamics?

I have an idea already but just want to see if it stands up.

                                                                           Also there is a BIG

3674315088?profile=RESIZE_710x shift in the stats I wondered if you knew about it?

High achievers

Perfectionists

Tech engineers

lthe list goes on...

Thanks for your point of view.

Tess

  • I think everyone will likely have had an element of it. Starting a new job is always really exciting and then you get there and feel overwhelmed because everything is different and you start questioning whether you really know what you're doing.
    • Oh yes I know that feeling, I actually felt it a little when I arrived at Centrum, I guess the friendly helpful people do make a difference. Just putting one step in front of the other is progress enough.
  • I have met more than a few folk with imposter syndrome - both male and female. I think it has more to do with background and experience than gender.
    • Great answer Helen, often the perception is it is a female thing, in fact, the original research was only done with women back in the 70's . New research has been done with both male and female and they found the aspects live in all people.
  • Just seen this Tess,
    1. yes! In many jobs & even within social situations at times.
    2. I would say female dynamics however i'm not clued up on the stats!

Anxieties and under confidence in an environment are not fun, however I believe a lot of it would be in our heads.
    • Thanks, Jessie, we are running the event on the 7th November so if anyone wants to come to hear more they can just sign up.

I reading more and more about this phenomenon and its interesting to see that Imposter Syndrome has less to do with self-esteem...
Here is a perfect quote from Clare Josa, who has just released her book on the subject.
“Imposter Syndrome isn’t just self-doubt in a spiky suit. It’s the gap between who you see yourself as being and who you think you need to be, to succeed and lead.”
      • Interesting! Thanks for sharing :)
