The technology required to allow us to work from home has been around for a long time but for the most part this wasn’t standard practice for many people\businesses but will that still be the case post lockdown?

Having to work from home presents some new challenges but it also clearly demonstrates how easy it is to access business services and systems from anywhere.

Some things to think about both now and going forward:

  1. Security
    1. Antivirus\Anti-spam\Anti-phishing
    2. What about those home devices that are now connecting to the office VPN?
  2. Health and Safety
    1. You don’t realise how bad a seat can be for you until you spend all day on a kitchen seat
    2. What about DSE it is just as important for you to have a comfortable and safe work environment at home as it is in the office
    3. Headsets to avoid neck strains
  3. Others
    1. Printing
    2. We already know that two monitors increase productivity in the office, its no different at home
    3. Space?
    4. Professional image with video or audio calling
    5. Disruptions with kids, pets, noise etc.
    6. Are you disrupting the rest of the family?

What do you think? Do you love working from home and want it to continue or do you hate it and can't wait to get back into the office?

  • Being self employed I've worked from home for years already!

Although did give my desk a good clean and removed a lot of stuff that wasn't being used (you wouldn't believe how much old cables, speakers, etc. where covering my desk!!) so that corner of the room feels like a new room in a way... which probably helps with the lockdown a little bit. :-)

Suspect working from home will continue post-lockdown - maybe not right away, maybe initially people going back to the office, and then slowly taking advantage of their newly discovered technology to work from home again, even if its just some days of the week.

    • A desk clear always feels good and you end up with so much space. Doesnt take long to fill back up again though.

  • Good one Mark. Like most people I think there's going to be much more home working after all this, whether it's based at home all or some of the time. That'll have lots of advantages for individuals, businesses and the environment. But you're absolutely right to bring up some of the other things you've listed there. WFH can't be right for everyone all of the time!

  • Thanks for your post Mark. For me I think both will be good I.e working from home and office as well. I agree screens are better for posture but the laptop gives me that flexibility as well to move about and multitask. Lol.

But overall I really miss my office and machines. Lol

Trust you are keeping very well.

    • Hi Ola,

      Yes all good here.

I think you are right that people will want to do both especially as everyone now knows it works.

I bet not being able to have your machines up and running is driving you up the wall, however enjoy the family time as you will be back working all the hours again before you know it.

      Thanks

      Mark

      • I know right. Lol. Thanks Mark.
